Amics
de la Terra Eivissa
is a non governmental organization (NGO), founded in 1989,
working on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, one of the
Balearic islands. It is a member
of
Friends of the Earth Spain
(Amigos de la Tierra España), which forms part of the
world wide network of
Friends of the Earth
International,
present in more than 60 countries of the world.
WHAT
DO WE DO ?
- Public
awareness campaigns on water use, genetic engineering,
domestic waste and recycling, the use of toxic products
in agriculture etc.
- Education
in the schools: talks on recycling, renewable energy,
water etc.
- Organise
conferences on different subjects of environmental
interest
- Proposals
to the authorities about the conservation of natural
resources, the use of renewable energy, water, forest
fire prevention etc.
- Reporting
environmental damage to the authorities and/or activities
or constructions which threaten protected or fragile
areas, with the objective of pressuring them to take
action.
HOW
MANY YEARS HAS THE GROUP EXISTED ?
In
1989 the association was started by a group of friends who
were concerned about the progressive deterioration of the
beaches, bays and woodland areas. Lack of planning,
uncontrolled construction and waste disposal were taking
their toll on these natural areas. Campaigns were launched
to pressure the authorities to take measures to remedy the
damage. Since then the ecological movement has gathered
force to become a strong lobbying organisation.
WHAT
PART DO MEMBERS PLAY IN THE ASOCIATION ?
The
role of the members is fundamental to the functioning of the
group. All the activities and campaigns that are undertaken
depend on the support (economic and/or personal) of the
members. The board of directors, which is formed by a group
of volunteers who meet regularly to organise and carry out
the work of the association, is elected annually by the
members in the Annual General Assembly. The members are
invited to take part in the campaigns and other activities
of the association.
CONTACT
WITH MEMBERS
We
try to maintain close contact with our members, informing
them of the activities and important dates in our calendar
in a three monthly bulletin. At the end of each year we
celebrate the Annual General Assembly to which all members
are invited to propose ideas & campaigns for the coming
year.
Our
motto: "
THINK GLOBALLY......ACT LOCALLY "

WHAT
ARE WE TRYING TO ACHIEVE ?
The
sustainable use of natural resources; the protection and
conservation of important wildlife areas; the involvement of
the society in decision making in all these matters; the
improvement of quality of life without risking that of
future generations; the defence of human rights and the
rights of all living beings on the planet.
HOW
DO WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE THIS ?
Applying
a global vision to the different problems that threaten our
planet in order to treat them on a local level:
DESERTIFICATION,
CLIMATE CHANGE, LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY, CONTAMINATION OF THE
ATMOSPHERE, LAND AND SEA.
Protest, education, criticism and the proposal of
alternatives to solve existing problems, are essential
components in our strategy to achieve positive changes.
