AMICS DE LA TERRA EIVISSA
ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING

Every year, the members of AMICS DE LA TERRA EIVISSA choose from a list of candidates, the winners of the prizes 'Friend and Enemy of the Earth' ('AMIC Y ENEMIC DE LA TERRA' for that year.

AMICS DE LA TERRA

ENEMICS DE LA TERRA

2006 The Association Amics de ses Figueretes, a citizen's group which fought for the last 2 years against a massive marina project which was planned on the coast in their area. As a result of their concerted lobbying and legal action, the project has been "frozen".

2006 Pere Palau, the president of the Island Council, won the negative prize. The island has suffered an "ECO-HELL" under his presidency, with vast road projects being approved and carried out, and an Island planning law (PTI ) which allows construction in protected areas, golf courses and marinas along the coast.

2005 The positive prize is also unusual in the same way. For the second year running,  the group against the road schemes (los antiautopistas) have won this prize. Their sheer persistence in the face of an unyielding administration and their impeccably democratic way of fighting the battle has earned them this award.

2005 The prize of  "Enemy of the Earth 2005" was awarded once again this year to counciller for public works, Stella Matutes and her father Abel Matutes, who is the business man behind  the controversial new motorways. A prize has never been given twice to the same people but the circumstances merit this. Their continuous lies about the reality of the road projects and their attacks on the people who are fighting these projects and those who support them, has more than earned them a repeat!

2004 The Platform "NOVOLEM AUTOPISTES!" for their excellent work in organising the protests against the unecessary road building projects.

2004 The counciller for public works, Stella Matutes, for promoting the motorway projects and her undemocratic stance.

2003 The Island Bee Keepers Association for their work to increase public awareness of the importance of honey bees and their activities, both for rural life and for the environment.

The journalist Joan Lluís Ferrer, received a special prize in recognition of his dedication to defending the environment against urban development.

2003 Pere Palau, the president of the Island Government (Consell Insular) for a series of measures rushed through parliament during his first months of coming to power, all of which remove the protection of important natural areas: the reform of the Law of Natural Areas (LEN), the elimination of the Natural Park of Cala d'Hort and the recovery of old building projects in areas of the coast which still remain intact.

2002 The environmental group, "GEN/GOB" (Grup d'Estudis de la Naturalesa) for its exceptional work in the protection of the island, this year being their anniversary.

2002 The Senator Enrique Fajarnés for his defence of the airport enlargement, a project which the local population are against and which is totally inconsistent with sustainable development, since it will permit 3 million additional tourists to enter the island during the peak summer months when all the present infrastructures are pushed to the limit.

2001 The vets Lorenzo Córdoba and Javier Serra shared the prize 'Amic de la Terra 2001´ for their involvement in the treatment of damaged marine turtles.

The Associations Dúo and ADDA and Elsa Gluck, Lyn Luzcandi and Burgi Swobodi for their work in taking care of abandoned and mistreated domestic animals. (mención especial)

2001 The PP and the Pacte Progressista of Sta. Eulária won this prize. The PP for using planning laws which are outdated and illegal and the opposition for not making this public knowledge.

2000 Manu San Felix the marine biologist, for his role in bringing about a change in public awareness with respect to the marine plant known as Posidonia oceanica, essential for the conservation of the beaches, shore and marine ecosystem.

Jordi Monterde, the forest warden received a special mention for his exceptional work.

2000 Vicent Guasch Tur, the mayor of Sta. Eulària for authorizing the urbanization of ES POUET, ignoring its environmental and social impact.

1999 The platform of local people who have fought for many years against the golf course in Cala d'Hort.

1999 The Balearic Port Authorities for actively promoting the EIVISSA port enlargement and the dock of ES BOTAFOC.

1996 Gabriel Cañellas the Mallorquin politician for placing obstacles in the way of the protection of ses Salines, the important wetland.
