JANUARY 22

ANNIVERSARY OF THE PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION "NO MES DESTRUCCIO" OF 1999

when 12.000 people (15% of the island's population) took to the streets to demand more protection of natural areas and more stringent controls on construction.

FEBRUARY 2

WORLD WETLANDS DAY

A day to call attention to the importance of wetlands and in particular, in the case of Eivissa & Formentera, to the need to give real protection to Ses Salines.

MARCH 10

ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES DAY

Renewable, non-contaminating forms of energy are the only option for a sustainable future.

MARCH 15

WORLD CONSUMER DAY

On this day we offer consumers information about issues which affect their health and the environment, such as the health risks of PVC, genetically modified foods and responsible consumption.

MARCH 21

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE TREE

A day to call attention to the importance of trees and woodland ecosystems, habitats of great biological diversity.

APRIL 22

WORLD EARTH DAY

Earth Day is an opportunity to show solidarity to those populations suffering environmental problems and to stress the importance of using our natural resources more responsibly.

MAY 22

BIOLOGICAL BIODIVERSITY DAY

Date of the signing of the Biodiversity Convention. Every year, thousands of species disappear.

The causes: the deterioration or fragmentation of their habitats, the introduction of exotic species, contamination, climate change, intensive agricultural or reforestation with rapidly growing monoculture species. In Eivissa the greatest threat to Biodiversity is the urbanisation of natural areas.

JUNE 5

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

A day to call attention to urgent issues of importance.

JUNE 17

INTERNATIONAL DAY TO FIGHT DESERTIFICATION

The gradual loss of fertile and productive land all over the planet is an ever increasing problem.

JUNE 22

DAY OF THE SUN

A day to remember that all living forms of life on this planet depend on the sun's energy for their survival. Source of clean renewable energy.

SEPTEMBER 16

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE OZONE LAYER

The threats which affect the Ozone layer, the fragile shield which protects the Earth from damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun, are several: the use of Methyl Bromide used to disinfect soils and some refrigerants (CFCs).

The Montreal treaty of 1987 has banned the use of most of these products, but even with these bans in force, it is estimated that the hole in the Ozone layer will take at least a century to close.

SEPTEMBER 22

WORLD DAY OF THE OCEANS

The marine ecosystems of Eivissa and Formentera are important habitats to many species of marine life.
Nevertheless they are under threat: yachts anchor and damage in the sea grass forests (Posidonia oceanica), sewage waste is discharged without proper treatment and the authorities support projects to create new sandy beaches using sand from the sea bed.

DECEMBER 29

WORLD BIODIVERSITY DAY

Only 5,2% of Spanish territory is legally protected, compared with 8% in the rest of Europe and the Spanish proposals for the European Network 2000 are way behind schedule. Biodiversity means variety of life, not only referring to ecosystems but also species and individual forms of life.
