AMICS DE LA TERRA EIVISSA
FIRST YEARS

In the Spring of 1989, a group of friends, amongst them Chris Dews, Al Peterson, Neil Rock & Pep Ribas, became concerned about the state of the island, its natural woodlands, beaches and bays becoming contaminated with sewage and rubbish. They decided to take action to put an end to this worrying situation.

In only 5 months they cleaned more than 20 beaches!

But it soon became evident that the problems were more serious than this, so they decided to send a request with the necessary documentation, to the Federation of Friends of the Earth Spain (Amigos de la Tierra España) asking to start a local group in Eivissa. In June that year the association was formally constituted.

In the following years various different campaigns were launched: requiring the authorities to remove abandoned cars, cleaning up sewage pollution of the sea & illegal landfill sites.

Public awareness campaigns, the promotion of the sustainable use of natural resources and environmental education in the schools and the defense of areas important to wildlife such as Ses Salines have been added to the list of activities and concerns of the group.

Throughout the years, Amics de la Terra has become one of the most important social movements of the island, working in many areas: Environmental education, genetically modified foods, water use, waste management etc.
